Ulverston Carnival

Ulverston is a vibrant market town famed for the likes of Sir John Barrow (founding member of the Royal Geographic Society), Stan Laurel (co-star of the Laurel & Hardy movies) and it's canal (at 1.25 miles long it is claimed to be the deepest, widest and shortest in the UK).

Most notibly on arrival one sees a pictureque tourist town set within the most incredible scenery bordered by the magnificent fells of the Lake District and the stunning views across Morcambe Bay.

My visit was prompted by my partner, who visiting family, planned this to coincide with the day of Ulverston's annual carnival festivities. A colourful event brought to life by lively music, dancing troupes and impromptu performances, attracting neigh on 10,000 spectators lining the streets.

For the first time since 2005 the event then moved on to Ford Park (one time sports fields of Ulverston Victoria High School) where, the party continued long into the glorious sunny afternoon. Aside from the stalls and bouncy castles, this is where dancing troupes from far and wide competed and performed to the onlooking crowds, who bathed in the afternoon sun.

Much fun was had by all and my visit to Ulverston was filled with many bright and dazzling photographs of dancers and carnival-goers alike, making for a wonderful day spent in the company of friends.
