Edinburgh Road Club: "Lothian Flyer" Memorial Road Cycle Race

On Saturday 18th June 2011 a number of cyclists braved the weather and took off on a road race in commemoration of Archie Craig, a.k.a. 'the Lothian Flyer', a pre-war cycling hero.

With a total length of some 44 miles (70.8km) the field assembled near Stobo Kirk and heading up to Dreva, completed the full Dreva - Rachan - Drumelzier - Dawyck circuit 6 times before ascending a 7th time up the Dreva road and finishing adjacent the Ancient Fort and Settlement site at Dreva Craig.

Paul Torrance (Ayr Roads/Harry Fairburn) took a narrow victory from Ewan Macpherson (Dunfermline CC) with Brian McCardle (East Kilbride RC) finishing in third spot.

The Upper Tweeddale valley is not shy of luring cycling club events with local cycling club Peebles CC often holding events here. Indeed, cycling tourists visit these parts from afar to enjoy the incredible scenery whilst delighting in the quality of the back-country roads.
